Tips for a comfortable, happy and safe visit ...
CONSULS IN MOMBASA

Mombasa is the most important tourist town for Kenya.  Numerous overseas governments have elected a Consul to attend to the needs of its citizens who visit and reside in Mombasa ... and to represent the country's commercial interests.

The Consuls representing these countries have resided in Kenya for some time and are aware of the laws, formalities and protocols of Kenya.  Other countries may be represented by Embassies in Nairobi and their telephone numbers may be found in the Kenyan telephone directory. Details for those in Mombasa are found below.

HOW THE CONSULATES MAY HELP
If you find yourself in trouble or in difficulties in Kenya - even if it is through no fault of your own - contact your nearest Consulate or Consular Section of an Embassy or High Commission - especially if you have nowhere else to turn.  The staff will always try to offer sound advice and sympathy if you are genuinely in distress.

DO NOT EXPECT THE CONSULATE TO BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU ...
  • Money.  Naturally, it is up to you to arrange adequate insurance for yourself to cover medical problems, traffic accidents, losses through theft and so on.
  • Telephone or telex facilities.
  • Services, such as interpretation or legal advice.
  • To pay bills - whether legal, medical, hotel, travel or any other debts.
  • Because these are all things that you should normally arrange and pay for yourself, taxpayers' money cannot be made available to cover such expenses.

IN AN EMERGENCY
If an emergency leaves you completely without funds, and the banks or business offices are closed, the Consulate will:
  • Cash a personal cheque drawn on a home bank, on production of a recognised banker's card against payment of a consular fee.
  • Help you to contact relatives and friends, or banks or building societies back home, to transfer funds.
  • As a last resort, in cases of proven hardship only, offer temporary repayable advances to enable you to return home. Applications are granted subject to strict conditions.

IF YOU ARE ARRESTED
Insist on contacting your Consul or a member of his or her staff.  A member of staff will visit you as soon as possible, and can arrange for messages to be sent to relatives or friends.

DO NOT EXPECT THE CONSUL TO BE ABLE TO -
  • Secure your release
  • Arrange for your defence to be conducted at the taxpayers' expense to get better treatment for you than normal for nationals of the country holding you.
  • Give legal advice.

BEREAVEMENT
At the time of a bereavement, one requires as much guidance and help as one can get.  This is the time to contact your Consul.  The Consul will advise you on the procedures required for either a local burial or for the transfer of the body overseas.  Certain permissions will be need to be granted to take a body out of Kenya and to enable airline bookings to be made.
